Fall Arrest vs Fall Restraint

Fall Restraint

Fall Protection Equipment (F.P.E) that prevents the worker from getting into a situation of a fall or reaching a point where a fall can occur is referred to as fall restraint. Fall Restraint Equipment

When using fall restraint equipment the person can move around and perform their duties and the fall restraint equipment will prevent them getting into a fall situation

Fall restraint system includes: an anchorage point –  Tested to EN795 for Restraint or Fall Arrest, a work positioning belt also known as a restraint belt or a full body safety harness and a restraint lanyard or a work positioning system. A fall restraint / work positioning system can be of any length as long as a person cannot get into a situation of a fall. Work positioning keeps a person in a place of work and enables him/her to have both hands free to perform their duties.

Fall Arrest

If the work duties involves the risk of a fall from height it is necessary to use fall protection equipment that will arrest the fall by absorbing the forces generated.

A fall arrest system includes: an anchorage point –  Tested to EN795 for Fall Arrest, A full body safety harness, a fall arrest / energy absorbing lanyard or a self retracting lifeline.

When using a fall arrest / energy absorbing lanyard, careful consideration must be taken into account for the fact of minimum free space (MFS) below the point of anchorage and whether there are likely to be any obstructions in the event of a fall.

When using self retracting lifelines careful consideration must be taken into account for the pendulum effect where a user can swing during a fall and collide into and obstruction or hit the ground.

When using a fall arrest system, whether it is a fall arrest / energy absorbing lanyard or a self retracting lifeline careful consideration must be taken into account for the workplace environment e.g the risk of sharp edges on any obstruction in the event of a fall.
